Artist Statement:

“There is one simple way that I can describe my creative process –enjoyable! While I certainly do research the subject matter and for my paintings, the actual creation process has to be enjoyable for me, not just the end result. The development process can be intellectual, but my creation process is intuitive. If the “real life” colour does not work for me, I will simply change it.  I am not hung up on staying true to form.   Some of my best work has required a lot of work prior to the painting process, and not a lot of time during the actual creation process. This is a level of success that I attempt to maintain. The ultimate goal is an enjoyable process, as well as, a fantastic end result. I have learned to have a very critical eye, sadly not every painting makes the cut, but I have the ability to start over. And that ability is energizing and refreshing; I simply look forward to a greater refinement of my skill and intuitive process.”

Artist Bio:

Born in Toronto, Sheryl was raised in Mississauga ON, where she lived until graduating from high school in 1995. The beginning of many courses of study in fine art that Sheryl completed were water colour painting classes at the Spring Bank Visual Arts Centre in Mississauga, Ontario; along with art courses in life drawing and perspective drawing at the Ottawa School of Art. It was not until a summer home from university that Sheryl met her first art mentor, Lila Irving, who is an abstract expressionist artist with a studio located in Port Credit. Sheryl set out right away to buy the right supplies to try acrylic painting for the first time, and began to paint abstract expressionist paintings. Current Work: After a long duration of experimentation, Sheryl landed a very unique style that combines acrylic paint, paper, pastel and marker on canvas. All of the paintings are vibrant and energetic and a true reflection of Sheryl’s strong passion for nature, and a desire to focus on optimistic methods of creating “green” urban environments. Although much of the work is based on prior research regarding the subject, the actual paintings are created with a combination of “fact” and “fiction,” often altering the true life colours to suit the mood of the painting. All of the urban cites, birds, nests, and landscape trees are created by layering paper, gel medium, marker and pastel, and finalizing the technique by sealing the paper with varnish.
